Atlanta Symphony Field Trip!

We had a wonderful time watching the Atlanta Symphony play at Lassiter High School! This field trip met the 5th grade standards for music. The girls had such a great time! Be sure to ask them all about it 🙂

This week is conference week so students will be dismissed 2 hours early at 12:15. If you are not sure of your conference time please e-mail me or tell your child to come ask me. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you!

This week in math we will be starting on the orders of operations (PEMDAS). Students will not have a 10+2 homework this week, but will get a different math worksheet daily.

In science we are starting our matter unit and studying physical and chemical changes. If you are able to donate a medium size pumpkin to our class for an experiment we will do in about 2 weeks I would greatly appreciate it!

In reading we are continuing our Literature Circles reading the BFG (The Big Friendly Giant). Ask your children to tell you about it!

Let’s have a great week ladies!

5th grade news anchors and STEM Day was a success!

Last week we had some of our very own classmates apply and interview to be Brumby News Anchors, and they made it! Congrats to Nichole, Iris, Jaden, and to all other 5th graders!

As you may have heard, Friday was our first STEM Day of the year, and it was a success! We couldn’t have done it without all of your support in providing some of the supplies needed. Ask your girls all about what they built!

Highlights for this week:

Math: We are continuing multiplying decimals and will go into dividing decimals. We will have a short quiz on multiplying decimals Tuesday along with a mixed review quiz on Thursday.

Reading: We will continue working on inferences, and I hope to start our literature circles for our novel study.

Science: We are continuing our Catastrophic Events lab stations this week. We will have a short quiz on Wednesday.

Let’s have a great week Bobcats!

What we have been working on and a few reminders

I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Labor Day weekend! I can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow! The past 2 weeks we have been working in Science Lab Stations. We are learning more about Catastrophic events and Constructive/Destructive Forces through many different stations.

In math we have been working on adding and subtracting decimals. This week we will be working on the order of operations and multiplying and dividing decimals.

In reading we have been practicing inferencing, and will soon move on to point of view.

This Friday is STEM Day!!! We appreciate all supply donations that we receive! We truly can’t do this without all of your support! If you haven’t already and would like to donate supplies there is still time! Please bring in any supplies by this Friday.

Progress reports will go home this Wednesday. Remember that this is NOT your child’s final grade for the quarter. It just shows the progress they have made so far.

This is a short week girls and we have a lot of work to do! Rest up and I will  see all of your beautiful faces tomorrow 🙂

What are we learning?

These past two weeks we have done a lot with place value and decimals in math. We are currently working on comparing and ordering decimals. Students started receiving the 10 + 2 math homework. They have 10 problems on the front and 2 word problems on the back. They are responsible for completing 3 problems a night. We go over any questions they may have in class the next day. They receive their 10 + 2 every Monday, and it’s due on Fridays.

In Science we jumped into our Constructive and Destructive unit with a QR code Scavenger Hunt. Students completed these today. We will continue to study these forces for the next few weeks.

In reading we have studied character traits, and are currently working on theme. We will soon start a novel study! I have not started reading logs as of yet, but please encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes every night.

On most Wednesdays we work on Think Tac Toes.  This is a choice board that has one activity for each content area. Girls, do not forget to complete any unfinished work from your Think Tac Toe. You should have your Words Their Way sort, science vocabulary, and theme worksheet complete and ready to turn in tomorrow. See you all tomorrow!
